Family trip to Salmo...and Nelson...and Creston!

Salmo, Nelson, and Creston are not exactly tourist destinations (to say the least--hahaha) but that's where we took our kids this summer and here's why:

Why Salmo?

So, my brother in law, Ted grew up in Salmo before he moved to Langley and met Tina.  Just a year or two ago, his Dad bought his old family home there and renovated it.  So Tina and Ted invited all of us to check it out!  Salmo is a tiny town...out in the middle of nowhere, 7  hrs from home.

While we were there, we played games--we learned that I am the absolute worst at "the question game" and that Jason and Becca can name any tune within half a second.  We had some great campfires, where Becca fell through a chair and Eric roasted 5 marshmallows at once, and the rest of us got eaten alive by mosquitos.  We took over the Salmo pool (there was only one other person there that wasn't part of our group)...playing an intense game of football and cheering everyone on at the end of the diving board.  Tyson finally got the courage to do a flip, Ben tried about a hundred times but didn't quite get up the nerve, Eric walked to the end of the board but couldn't quite jump in.  We also did some hikes, ate some yummy food (except the cold potatoes) and just enjoyed being together away from the busyness of life.

Why Nelson?

So, Nelson is only about 30 min from Salmo...and the closest town with a Walmart and a few restaurants so I am sure without the other draws we still would have gone there.  But, Nelson is special to our family for a couple of reasons.   First, my Uncle Raymond lived there!  We drove by his house and visited his grave.  I have very fond memories of visiting my uncle when I was young (and him driving out to Abbotsford to stay with Grandma).  I remember his spaghetti sauce made from scratch, his cute house, his homemade guitars...and much more.  Also, my parents lived in Nelson while my dad went to art school and Lisa was actually born there!  It was special to be there with my kids and share some stories about my family with them.

While we were there, we also drove up to Ainsworth Hot Springs! They still had the caves that I screamed through as a kid...I still think they are pretty creepy!!

Summer practically spent the entire time in the "cold" pool
(which was actually filled with ICY cold water!)

Why Creston?

Mike spent his high school years in Creston, BC.  He's always wanted to take the kids to show them where he grew up!  Creston is only about an hour outside of Salmo, so we thought this would be the perfect opportunity.  It was wonderful to visit some of the people who played a huge part in Mike's life as well as in him joining the church.

We visiting The Rennakers...his best friend Derrin's parents.  They were so friendly and welcoming.  The had three huge cats, and they let Summer pick raspberries and they fed us way too much food!!  Their property was absolutely beautiful!

We visited Gloria Huschroft.  It was funny because Mike couldn't get a hold of her on the phone so we just drove to her house but she had a gate blocking her driveway.  We were going to drive away but then we saw an older lady walking in the back yard and Mike got out of the car and yelled "GLORIA"  we were all laughing hysterically in the car!  She had horses and lots of dogs for the kids to play with!

We visited Mike's old Bishop and seminary teacher and his wife.  They had a nest of babies birds on their patio and a bearskin rug so Summer was in heaven--haha!

The drive from Salmo to Creston was so beautiful!  I am so glad we had the chance to go and visit where Mike grew up and meet some of the important people from his past.  And, I know I'm in the minority, but I just love road trips:)  So, "thank you" to Tina and Ted for inviting us up to Salmo...it was definitely a wonderful family trip!

Wilderness 2019

When we agreed to do Wilderness (stake youth conference), I really had no idea what I was getting myself into!

I thought it was:

 1) a night hike 2) with a fireside, 3) sleep one night 4) then head home.

Turns out it was:

 1) a night hike with NO flashlights 2) all-day activities, a fireside, testimony meeting, fasting, solo experience 3) sleep TWO nights 4) head home on the third day in the afternoon

I was so stressed and nervous about the whole thing!  But we ended up having a great experience and I'm so glad we went!!

They divided us into families with 9 children who we got to know really well.  The night hike would have been impossible for me, but with the help of our kids (some which were amazing leaders in the dark) we managed to make it to camp, all in one piece by about 1am (we started the hike around 10:30pm).

Friday was full of stations run by the stake. They included a blind walk, Telestrations, Polynesian dancing, scripture writing, missionary stories, fire building, team building, and team bonding experiences.

My favorite part of the day was making dinner together as a family.  All the kids helped and it was so cute to see their personalities shining through.  They even managed to deep fry some french fries and Swedish fish, hahaha.  And the stew turned out pretty good, even with two whole onions and only half the carrots and celery (oh and it was overflowing in my pot!!)

Saturday morning we fasted and participated in a "solo experience".  This was where we pondered some spiritual questions alone in the wilderness.  We also read letters written to us by our parents (or spouse if you were one of the adult leaders).  It was a special experience.  Even writing the letters was a special experience for me as a parent.  We were all teary-eyed and ready when the testimony meeting started.  We ended the weekend with a feast...and waiting an hour for the buses to arrive;)  Such a wonderfully spiritually uplifting weekend.

She Drives (...me crazy--JK)

It was a little easier teaching our second driver...
...not sure if that's just Kya's personality or if we were a little less scared.

But now that she's passed both her tests and turned 16, it's not any easier to let her drive off by herself.  Driving is so dangerous, and I will always worry when they are on the road!!  But Kya is a good little driver and she did a great job learning to drive!  Good job Kya:)

SWEET SIXTEEN

If you can believe it, Kya is now 16!!

We started the day off with a yummy breakfast...

...then headed to the lake (with her new unicorn floaty)

It was such a beautiful day!

A few days later she did a combined party with Kenzie in our backyard

We rented a bouncy waterslide
(the guys who set up the slide volunteered to rescue the #6 balloon
when in floated up super high in the tree--our hero!)

Somehow, everyone survived the waterslide!
There were definitely some bumps and bruises though.

Kya and Kenzie had such a great turn out!
(I think when everyone was there, we counted 20 guests)

We got a cake from Costco...to feed all the teenagers!

They had a crazy water balloon fight!
Kids were even fleeing to the park across the street so they wouldn't get hit!

The night ended with a bonfire and smores (at midnight!!)

Kya had such a great time at her party!!
Happy Birthday beautiful girl--you deserve all the happiness in the world:)

Grad 2019

I can't believe it's finally here--Jordan's High School Graduation!
She's been waiting a long time for this:)

The Day before graduation (which happened to be Father's Day) we had a grad party for Jordan.  Lots of friends and family came to celebrate the big day.  I was so grateful to my sisters, parents and the Tambres for traveling down from Canada to celebrate with us.  It meant a lot!!

Jordan and her girlfriends did a photoshoot in there caps and gowns before the big day!

Her actual graduation!!
Congratulations Jordan, can't wait to see what the world has in store for you!
