Parenting Question

Mike and I have slightly different views about what is too scary for kids to watch. How do you decide if a movie is too scary or too grown-up for your kids? I lean a little on the conservative side...I think. Jordan hadn't seen a movie with real people in it until she was about six. I think part of the reason why I am like that is I get scared VERY easily (my entire family knows the story of me crying and trying to get off the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland when I was...10, or my screams from inside the caves at the hot springs, or my nightmares after watching The Twilight Zone). Anyways, how do you all decide what your kids are old enough to watch?? My kids are watching Star Wars 3 right now and when I said it was too scary Mike said "Mom thinks Dora is scary."

I'm totally with you. My kids have never seen Star Wars or anything remotely scary. I think Dustin let them see part of Transformers and I was a little upset. I figure if he's going to let them watch it, he can deal with the after math. But as a rule, I generally try to stay away from scary/realistic movies.

Yeah, I'm more on the conservative side, too. I remember even being scared of Alice in Wonderland and E.T. when I was little. But definitely if any movie is above the G rating, we take a moment to think about showing it to them. I definitely don't think I'd show my kids Star Wars until they're at least ten! Darth Vader is pretty dang scary!

We preview, check out www.kidsinmind.com and never venture above PG. My kids get nightmares. BUT they do love the original Star Wars. (Then again, they're older boys) We also have some criers in our house, so no sad movies either. (and surprisingly I'm not referring to myself, but Dalton)

Brody will tell me if something is too scary (like Ursula from Little Mermaid or Scar from Lion King). If he keeps covering his eyes and ears, I know it's too scary.

I'm definitely conservative on this one, too. I would keep them little and innocent forever, if I could! I even edit "Nemo".
